Back-to School-Nights: Critical Thinking to the Fore

In my second year here, I thought I could be a little more adventurous and so I tried something different in two of the divisions.  With the help of 21st century technology (using a text message poll for mobile phones), I asked parents in the Lower and Middle Schools to respond to the question, “What is the most important aspect of your child’s education at USM?”

You can see their texted responses in the attached Wordles (view LS here, MS here). I do think it is interesting how certain words rose to the top among parents in both divisions. Critical thinking took the lead by far, but love of and for learning, confidence, compassion and collaboration were all strong finishers. These common themes align perfectly with the USM Mission Statement.

In the Upper School, I also have a role as a school parent (my son is now a sophomore).  As I visited classrooms, I was reminded how flexible our students need to be – changing subject matter every 45 minutes.  It is one reason I am so enthusiastic about the Freshmen Compass 9 and the Sophomore Humanities programs, which provide a series of interdisciplinary links between History, English, Biology, World Language, and Foundations of Art courses.

Something for Everyone: Homecoming 2012

What a wonderful week it was!  Even though the weather cooperated, it was not just the sun that made everything shine.  Our new, outdoor athletic complex provided the perfect setting for the SK-12 spirit assembly on Wednesday, September 12, when hugs from Willy the Wildcat and spirit cheers from each grade-level added to the excitement. A series of out-of-uniform theme days and the Upper School Pep Rally on Friday all contributed to the exhilaration that was in the air as “THE Weekend” approached.  Our girls’ field hockey team took to the field first, defeating Francis Parker 5-0. The Homecoming Game loss to Living Word Lutheran 47-33 only dampened enthusiasm momentarily. The official dedication of our new, upgraded athletic facilities and the honoring of three much-loved coaches: Don Forti, Liz Krieg, and Tom ‘Butch’ Richardson was a highlight of Friday evening. Saturday morning was dedicated to families who enjoyed the exciting activities and the 4K Wildcat Fun Run/2K walk. With success building on more success, the attendance at the Saturday night Homecoming Dance surpassed every number in recent history.

A huge thank-you to the Homecoming 2012 Committee and to all the donors, parents, alumni, students, faculty and staff who made this a Homecoming to remember.
